MySQL

MySQL is a popular, open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) that can run on more than 20 different platforms, including Linux, Windows and OS/X. It is often used in conjunction with the PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) programming language.

It can be used in place of SQL Server and Microsoft Access.

Functionality

MySQL is often used for collaboratively authored Web sites such as Wikipedia. Some of the other well-known sites built on MySQL relational databases include:

  • Yahoo!
  • Craigslist
  • Ticketmaster

Level of Difficulty

MySQL is easy to learn because it doesn't support advanced some advanced functions such as transactions. It is good for basic relational databases.
