In the world of search engine optimization (SEO), nothing rules supreme quite like the prospect of getting someone to link to your Web site. Once your site is properly optimized, you can attract niche traffic to your site and increase the amount of inbound links pointing in your direction. But how do you launch an SEO program that will actually produce results? (more…)

SEO refers to search engine optimization, so usually it goes without saying that SEO work is aimed at making sure your site appears in prominent places within popular search engines. But when it comes to duplicate content, many people forget about SEO, and use the same content in several places because it's easier than writing all new copy for every page or use it to cram more keywords into a site. But that can hurt your search engine rankings. (more…)

Cultivating online credibility requires currying favor with Google, which is best done by link-building. So let’s think: If your business and Web site were top of mind and authoritative, where would you expect to be listed or referenced on the Internet? Are your competitors referenced there already?

The most powerful and credible links on the Internet are placed by individuals who have influence over your online target audience. Often, these are bloggers, editors, industry experts – those with numerous social media followers. Wouldn’t it be good to have an industry influencer who likes you and promotes your stuff by mentioning your business to his or her vast audience? In many cases, that’s the magic touch a business needs to step up to the next level. (more…)

When you need a tooth pulled, you pay a dentist because that's not exactly the kind of service you’d want to handle yourself. So when your small business Web site needs SEO help, you hire an SEO consultant and consider it worth the cost.

Right?

Maybe not. Some business leaders find that when they hire an SEO consultant the rewards simply don't justify the up-front investment. If you want to make sure that your site is optimized for search engines, read this article before you decide to take the plunge and sign your name on that next check. (more…)

A Google Webmaster Help video from Matt Cutts released on Nov. 10, 2009 got me thinking how the listing text in Google's search results can easily be overlooked by some webmasters in their SEO efforts.

SEO is all about extending the reach of your Web site content to your target market using online search platforms. You can tell when this has been achieved, and to what degree, by using Web analytics software to monitor referral and visitor data. But what that data won't tell you is how your site appears to users in a SERP (Search Engine Results Page). Sure, you're getting traffic, but perhaps you're missing out on a lot more because your listing text is weak. You wouldn't take out a newspaper advertisement without looking at the final proof first. So don't be in the dark over how your site appears to people who use Google. (more…)
