Healthcare-Files.png2016 was a record-breaking year for the healthcare industry, and not in a positive way. Last year saw the most healthcare data breaches in history, and this trend hasn't slowed in 2017.
HIPAA Journal reported that 2017 is likely to break even more records for the medical sector. More than 16.6 million healthcare records were stolen or in some way compromised in 2016, and the first three months of this year alone exposed more than 1.7 million records.

Running your mission critical applications in the wrong environment may not immediately reveal itself to be a problem, but one outage, loss of data, or security breach will quickly prove differently. While IT Pros look to the cloud to help lower operating costs and improve efficiency, many organizations continue to be shackled by a lack of architecture guidance, poor solutions design, and ineffective support.

Hacker Recon.jpgWhat does a hacker want to know about your system? What OS you’re running? Your IP address? Your CRM vendor? Malicious breaches are happening at an ever-increasing rate, and it’s tough to know what angle a hacker plans to use to exploit you. Attacks in the healthcare industry in particular are on the rise, thanks to the valuable personally identifiable information (PII) and electronic protected health information (ePHIthese providers house. While the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), along with other mandates, puts in place a range of safeguards, getting inside the mind of a hacker can also go a long way toward protecting yourself.

You’ve got too much going on just trying to keep your business or organization profitable to worry about every new security exploit that compromises not only your assets, but inherently, your clients’ trust.
Case in point, password manager OneLogin was recently hacked by an actor that accessed a set of Amazon Web Services (AWS) keys that allowed them to possibly decrypt encrypted data. And even more alarming, a defense contractor stored United States intelligence data in the AWS cloud completely unprotected. In the case of OneLogin, a number of personal accounts were at risk, but a large number of users likely stored work passwords, as well, that could have been extracted from the breach. (more…)

Tall, broad, and bald, Peter Marsh fits the image of a man leading a security team. But unlike the bouncers that protect the clubs that line Austin, Texas’s busy Sixth Street, Peter guards Hostway's most valuable possession—our customer’s data.

Security-breach-300x194.jpgDo you remember your first day of work? Your very first day of full-time, non-intern, benefit-getting, 401(k)-matching, big kid work? For Reddit.com user "cscareerthrowaway567", the first day of their first job as a junior software developer, fresh from university graduation, meant panic, terror, and being fired by the company’s Chief Technology Officer. And you thought finding the restroom was bad.

Last year, TOPTHREEBREACHES.pngthe healthcare sector experienced a record-breaking number of data breaches, underscoring the importance of staunch security. Over the course of 2016, the industry saw 40 percent more breaches than it had the year previous, totaling 1,093 incidents. As Healthcare Informatics contributor Rajiv Leventhal pointed out, these events shine a light on "troubling data security trends [that] continue to plague the sector."
However, data breaches can teach other healthcare institutions and covered entities a thing or two about HIPAA compliance and overall security best practices. Today, we're counting down the three worst breaches to take place in the healthcare sector recently, and highlighting the lessons these instances impart.
